About the Technology Recycling Project Coalition
In 2004, Computer Power User published an article about electronic waste (e-waste) and its dangers. eBay's rethink initiative seemed appealing to one young man who loved computers and environmental science.
In 2005, the club teamed with the Technology Club at Pacifica to coordinate this project that seemed so big. Some research from the Technology Club's president found a company called ease e-waste, new and willing to help with the project. After starting an Environmental Science Club at his high school, Pacifica, and talking with several people, the Technology Recycling Project was born. The first project in April 2005 saw a minute (9 pieces of computer equipment?) success, but the clubs were determined to make this project a huge success the following year.
The following year, in 2005-2006, this happened. With the help of a new PR representative from ease e-waste, and the help of a legendary computer teacher at Pacifica, our project collected 33,000 pounds of electronic waste in two days from the community of Garden Grove and surrounding cities.
2006-2007 saw the growth of a project from one school to three locations in Garden Grove, including Pacifica. It was after this project that the idea of taking the project countywide was discussed for the following year.
That year, the founder of the Environmental Science Club graduated from Pacifica, and this project has now grown from an infant high school project to a community-wide initiative. This has grown into the Technology Recycling Project Coalition of Orange County.
We are now branching out into the many cities and communities of Orange County, helping to spread the word about e-waste and how the community can take action. Our team is doing this once a year to help the community get rid of their e-waste and making new room for new technologies.
